Gwansang (관상, 觀相) is the Korean art of reading character and fortune from facial features. With roots in Chinese physiognomy, it developed into a distinct Korean tradition that considers face shape, feature proportions, and overall harmony.
Face shape is the starting point: oval (卵), round (圓), square (方), heart (心), diamond (金), and oblong (長) each carry different associations in Korean physiognomy. An oval face, for instance, is traditionally associated with balance and adaptability.
Beyond shape, gwansang examines specific features: the forehead (career and early fortune), eyes (character and relationships), nose (wealth and middle-age fortune), and jaw (perseverance and late fortune). The proportions between these features matter as much as the features themselves.
Symmetry plays a crucial role — a balanced face suggests a balanced life path in traditional interpretation. The "three zones" (삼정) divide the face into upper, middle, and lower sections, each governing different life stages.
